|1.||Outline of the school|
|Japanische InternationaleSchule in Dusseldorf (JapaneseInternationalSchool
in Dusseldorf) started onApril 21, 1971, with 43 students. The school was
first opened for grades 5 to 9 in Canisiushaus,an additional building of
the St. Antonius Church in Oberkassel.
In those days, people did not usually think that Japanese schools were necessary in Europe. However, the children who went to the local schools had a lot of problems and difficulties due to the differences in languages and the school educational systems.
|Moreover, there were also problems for those who went back to Japan. It
was very difficult for those students and their families to enter or transfer
to the schools in Japan. Thanks to the tremendous effort of the Japanese
people who wished to solve those problems, our own school building was
built in 1973. However, the number of the students got bigger and bigger
as well as the rapid growth of Japan's economy. It reached a peak in 1992,
and then gradually began to decrease.
In 1983, the junior high school division had to leave the 'home ground' because of the capacity of the building. They moved to an old, brick-made school building, which was once a public school in Dusseldorf. The school was called 'Lanker school' as it was located on Lanker Strasse in Oberkassel, and it was loved by many students who studied there. The 'Lanker School' was carried on for 18 years, and in 2001, the year we welcomed the 30th anniversary of the school foundation, the junior high school division came 'home' and the two schools have been united again.
At present (June. 1st, 2014), it has 400 students in the elementary school division (Three classes each for grades 1 and 2, and two for grade 3 to 6: 14 classes in total), and 130 students in the junior high school division (Two classes for grades 7 and 8, and one for grade 9: 5 classes in total).
The Japanese school is in Dusseldorf, Germany. Its surroundings are very good. For example, there are a lot of trees and the air is clear. We can see squirrels and hares appear. Our school has a lot of trees, too. The students of both elementary and junior high school divisions are friendly to each other.
We have a lot of school events. The School Festival is one of them, which is a lot of fun. A large number of Germans take part in it, too.
|2.||Classes and Club Activities|
|This school has seven periods. Then we have club activities. We have eleven subjects; Japanese, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Music, P.E., Art, Industrial Arts and Homemaking, English, German, English conversation. German and E.C. are special to the school. There are seven clubs; for example, soccer, basketball, choir, brass band and so on. School begins at8:25 a.m. For junior high school students, there are seven periods on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and school ends around4:00 p.m. On Wednesdays and Fridays, we have six periods and finish around3:00 p.m. Then we have club activities and finish around5:00 or5:30 p.m.|
|This school has German classes two times a week. We have eight teachers (including two Japanese). Teachers are kind to students and all the students enjoy studying German. We are very glad when we can use the German we have learned in the class.|
|This school has English conversation classes, in which students can have valuable experiences. We have two or three classes a week. The teachers are native speakers. We have three courses, Basic, intermediate and Advanced course. Each student can choose his or her own level. It is very useful for the people whose dream is to become cosmopolitan.|
|We have some elective subjects in addition to other compulsory subjects. The aim of these elective subjects is to improve each studentfs ability.|
|4)||Information Technology (IT)|
|We have a class of eITf once a week. In the IT class, we learn how to use a computer, and how to handle information properly. We become able to use a computer very well.|
|3.||School Event Calendar|
|The First Term (April - June)|
|The first term has the entrance ceremony, the event gWalking along the
Rhein,h school trips and soon.
The event gWalking along the Rheinh is like an outing, and is for elementary school students. They enjoy walking, playing games, talking and eating lunch and so on. Through this event, they can make friends with each other, across all age groups.
|The Second Term (August - December)|
|We have a Sports Festival in the second term, which is very important for
us because it is the biggest event in the second term. The main performance
of elementary students is dancing, and that of junior high school students
is the Centipede Race (ten-legged race). The final race is a relay race.
The representatives run around the track. Everyone cheers the runners.
Our School Festival is the biggest event in our school life. Every student takes part in it with gusto. The studentsf council plans and carries out all the management.
There are many displays in the classrooms and performance.s on stage. For example, the students of each grade perform a play. And there are performances from the Brass Band, the Japanese Harp club and the choir, too. For this school festival, every student practices and prepares very hard. They practice after school and in their free time. The student council has a charity bazaar on the day when everybody enjoys the festival. The donated money is sent to Friensdorf International (Peace Village International), where the children wounded in war and conflict are given treatment.
|The Third Term (January - March)|
|In our school, the 9th graders leave school earlier. The graduation ceremony
is held beforehand. After that, we have the competition of Hyakunin-isshu
(one hundred poem cards.) We practice it in Japanese class, and try to
win a victory.
In March, the 6th graders complete the elementary school and the school year ends.
